Four categories not to sample

The official advice is explicit: do not collect, buy or eat wild mushrooms; avoid unverified homemade medicinal alcohol; do not let children sample unknown wild fruit; and never decant pesticide into a drink bottle. The same applies on rural Jingdezhen and Fuliang trips.

Color, silver, garlic or an animal test cannot identify a safe mushroom. 'Natural' or 'locals eat it' does not replace provenance and food-safety information.

Choosing food away from home

During hot weather, prefer restaurants with clear licensing and visible handling, and choose freshly cooked food heated thoroughly. Be more cautious with raw seafood, cold dishes, braised cold cuts and thawed cold-chain items. Do not leave takeaway at room temperature for long.

Travelers with allergy or dietary restrictions should carry a Chinese card and state whether cross-contact is acceptable. Retain the order, payment and seller details for attraction stalls, night markets and delivery.

What to do after symptoms

Stop eating suspect food after vomiting, diarrhea or abdominal pain. Seek prompt care for repeated vomiting, blood in stool, persistent high fever, or deterioration in a child or senior. Retain food, packaging, order and dining receipt for traceability.

Do not rely on folk remedies or continue a rural route or drive while impaired. A guide may assist communication and transport, while diagnosis and treatment belong to medical professionals.
